Metaphysical poets employed unusual and intellectual comparisons called conceits. In A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning, Donne compares the lovers’ souls to a pair of compasses:

 “Thy soul, the fixed foot, makes no show

To move, but doth, if th’ other do.”

This striking comparison shows the steadfastness and unity of love even when the lovers are physically apart.

2. Intellectual and Philosophical Depth

Metaphysical poetry blends emotion with reasoning. Donne doesn’t just express sorrow at parting but rationalizes it, arguing that their love transcends physical presence. He insists that their bond is spiritual and eternal, unlike “dull sublunary lovers’ love” that depends on physical nearness.
